Unperformed for centuries, parts of the opera were heard in concert in 2005 at Schloss Elisabethenburg. Now, it is being staged in Germany for the first time.

The story, based on the myth by Virgil and Ovid and set to Pietro Metastasio’s first opera libretto, tells of Dido and Aeneas—exiles scarred by fate—who fall in love on the shores of Carthage. But Aeneas must leave, and Dido’s desperate attempts to hold him back lead to heartbreak and deception.
